silent display manager

My Linux distribution of choice is Ubuntu. Ubuntu has decided, for whatever reason, that it would be clever to play a little sound when the login screen comes up. And beep--loudly--at you when you have logged in. This bug report indicates--I think--that the beeping is considered a feature. I suppose I could try to turn the little sound at the beginning off, but I don't particularly feel like hacking C so my computer won't beep at me.

A better solution:

sudo aptitude install slim

Slim is another display manager that does everything that the Ubuntu default does, only without the garbage. And without winding through a twisty maze of configuration files scattered across your hard drive. I like it.
